No Matter What, You Belong Here. Why I Work at Pure Barre…

When I first came across the instructor posting for Pure Barre in Philadelphia, I had no idea what the next four years at this company would bring. I taught in Philly for three years and as an instructor, I got to help people reach their goals each time they took class. I would encourage them to work a little bit deeper, straighten their leg a little more — push their bodies and their minds toward something they could achieve. When I moved back to Los Angeles, I wanted to continue being in a place surrounded by health, fitness, and strong individuals (both physically and mentally) — I became the Assistant Studio Manager of Pure Barre Santa Monica. Over the past year, I have learned what healthy looks feels like and why exercising in a community environment is so important.

There is no one right way to be healthy. At Pure Barre we focus on people as each unique individual that they are — helping you feel healthy within your own body. Making choices that best suit you. Want options?! Pure Barre’s got them. 1lb, 2lb, 3lb, 5lb or “no-pound” weights. Stay flat feet or rise high on your tippy toes. Try no arms! Or hold on to the barre for dear life as your thighs shake and quake (#itsworking). Pure Barre truly caters the workout to YOU. How you feel in that day, in that hour, and what you need for your body — and then pushing yourself a little further than you thought possible. To me, that is the most important part of being healthy — moving, stretching, strengthening — or should I say lifting, toning, burning. Using your body and challenging it the same way you do your mind. When you exercise, it feels good. Healthy isn’t about what you look like, it is about what you feel like.

There are so many different individuals that walk through our doors. Each one has a different body, mind, spirit, history, and goal, but each time someone new signs up for class or someone joins our 250 club, I see people making the active choice to take care of their bodies. By taking a class within a community of people, I notice there is a certain group effort, a communal strength leading the workout which in turn pushes each person a little more. At Pure Barre, I feel our community both in class and at the desk. It’s comforting to walk into a place where no matter what, you belong here. You have a place at the barre. Exercising can be a vulnerable place, but by taking it in a community environment you are supported, encouraged, and challenged. It creates a place that is more than just a fitness studio.

I love that I get to be in an environment like this all the time. That I get to work in a place that doesn’t just motivate me, but all the people who come to the studio! It’s a safe, low impact workout (that always kicks my seat!) and a welcoming, inspiring community (that’s always ready for more!)
